One of two non traditional housing blocks in the South West Denton area that St Astier has externally refurbished using an insulated render and brick slip system.
The unity type non traditional construction prior to work commencing on site.
Insulation materials mechanically fixed to a galvanised steel horizontal support rail system that spans between structural columns.
A brick slip system was installed at low level and applied above and below windows. The system is fully weather resistant whilst remaining vapour permeable.
Insulated render systems present a cost effective solution to upgrading the thermal performance of non traditional house types whilst providing a pleasing aesthetic result. The property shown here is one of two housing blocks where St Astier has installed an Alumasc Swisspan insulated render system. The Swisspan system is used to overclad existing properties where the possibilities for mechanical fixing are restricted to structural elements – here, to structural frames with non load-bearing concrete infill panels of the Unity type non traditional housing construction.
The external wall insulation system provides a weatherproof jacket to protect the fabric of the building from the elements, keeping it warm and prolonging its life. There has been a striking transformation in the buildings appearance which have taken on a far more modern feel thanks to the render finish which is designed to be almost maintenance free and self cleaning. The structures have also benefited from new canopies and roofing. A brickslip system has been applied to the lowest floor level. In addition slips have been applied above and below windows at mid and high level, all of which has added to the overall visual impact.
The project is due for completion at the end of June 2009 and forms part of the Modern Homes Programme at South West Denton, Newcastle upon Tyne for Your Homes Newcastle and their strategic partners, FHM.
This project was added to our site on 2 June 2009 and is currently filed under Non Traditional Housing .
