Decayed timbers at the Dovecot, Durham.
Following the removal of decayed timber, stainless steel reinforcement was introduced to provide a mechanical fix to the retained timber.
A low viscosity primer was used to strengthen the timber and provide a bond with the repair mortar.
Repair mortar was carefully replaced by hand and sculpted to match the profile of the timber.
Tools were used to scribe the grain into the mortar before the final set took place.
The bonding primer was applied and the frass was rubbed in to colour and texture the repair.
Once dried, the finished repair would be almost indistinguishable from the original timber.
This medieval barn in Durham was restored by a local architect as a dwelling. The feet of the principal rafters were too decayed and could not be fixed adequately to the wall plate. A combination of stainless steel reinforcement and mouldable epoxy mortar was used to restore the timber.
