Edinburgh Road Footbridge was repaired without causing traffic disruption.
Severe chloride attack caused by de-icing salts was identified as the main cause of the failure.
The damage had caused extensive spalling and cracking to the main support beams.
There was a risk that high level damage could fall onto the carriageway if remedial repairs were not carried out.
Where the concrete had not spalled but cracking was evident, epoxy resin was injected in to encapsulate the steel and bond the concrete together.
The extensive repairs took two weeks to complete.
We were conscious of keeping the footbridge open at all times so that pedestrians could use the facility and not risk crossing a busy road.
This concrete structure over the A194 trunk road to South Shields was suffering from spalling concrete due to aggressive road salts. St Astier were instructed to carry out concrete repairs to defective areas and resin injection to cracks to prevent water ingress.
