The Castle Keep has been restored on a number of occasions, three times during the 19 century and later during 1960’s and late 1970’s to address crumbling stonework as a result of natural weathering, erosion and pollution. Our stone restoration project spanned a 3 month period during which some 160 natural stone blocks were replaced.
In marked contrast to previous restoration work carried out some 20-30 years ago, a decision was made to better preserve the character of the structure by only replacing those stones which had failed structurally or where architectural detail had been significantly compromised.
This project was added to our site on 21 December 2005 and is currently filed under Built Heritage .
