Theatre Royal Case Study

Case Study detailing external repair and conservation works at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Theatre Royal reopened its doors on the 12th September to once more delight the region’s public following a six month period of works to restore the internal splendour of ‘The Grand Old Lady of Grey Street’. The £4.9million scheme also made provision for the careful repair and conservation of the theatre’s external façade, particularly to the front elevation with its imposing portico entrance. St Astier was instructed to carry out this sensitive aspect of works which comprised stone indentation, mortar based repairs, re-pointing, limited gentle cleaning and removal of bird guano. To mark the reopening of the Grade I listed theatre in time for its 175th birthday next year, we have now released our six page case study detailing the external repair and conservation works.
