There’ll be one less greetings card coming through your letterbox this Christmas. I’m afraid St Astier won’t be sending you a card. We’re sorry – it’s not personal. We’ll be giving the money we usually spend on Christmas cards to a local charity instead. That way, you may be a Christmas card short for your mantlepiece or reception area but you’ll get to indirectly contribute to a worthy cause. We hope you don’t mind.
We’ve chosen to make a donation to St Benedicts Hospice in Sunderland who specialise in palliative care, providing improved quality of life for patients and their families facing life threatening illnesses. The hospice has achieved a number of awards in the region and also won the Guy Rotherham National Award for Improving Patients Expreience of Hospice Care. £400,000 is currently needed to enable St Benedicts to expand their ‘Hospice at Home Service’.
There was also an environmental motivation behind switching from Christmas cards to a donation from this year forward. The UK throws away over 1 billion cards at the end of the festive season and the majority of these will still be in a landfill site some 30 years from now. If you’d like to send us a seasonal greeting this year then please consider using a free e-card service such as that provided by Environwise. You could then make a donation to charity with the money you save.
