Tower of the Gateshead Visitor Centre

The second phase of work at the Gateshead Visitor Centre gets underway next month. The building, which sits adjacent to the Tyne Bridge and on the South Bank of the river, is perhaps better known as St Mary’s Church although it ceased to function as a place of worship almost 30 years ago.

Following a detailed survey, St Astier undertook the first phase of works in the summer of 2007 which saw extensive repointing of the Aisles, Nave Clerestory – areas that exhibited signs of weathering and decay exacerbated by earlier attempts to repair the structure.

This second phase of works concentrates on stone conservation works to the tower, comprising of re-pointing with historic lime mortar and selectve stone indentation or replacement where architectural or structural details have failed.
