Ceramic Panels on Blythswood

Built in the 1970’s, Blythswood is an apartment block in the smart residential area of Jesmond. The facade of the building is clad with black ceramic panels. Problems had arisen with the fixings to the panels which resulted in some panels falling from the building, posing a serious safety problem.

St Astier’s brief was to remove all the ceramic panels, renew and improve the fixing system and also upgrade the insulation of the building. At the same time the wooden window frames were inspected, repaired ane painted. As the building is built on concrete columns with car parking, maintaining access for the residents was crucial. The 804 ceramic panels were removed and renewed over a 14 week programme with minimum disruption to the residents.
